PROTECT YOUR FAMILY PET
|

Susanville/Lassen County, CA- Valentine’s Day is a traditional time to show love for special people in our lives, but what about our pets? Pet owners are encouraged to show their love for their pets by quitting smoking this Valentine’s Day. During the month of February, veterinary offices are encouraged to ask their clients about their tobacco use and inform pet owners that they may protect their pets from secondhand smoke by choosing to quit or smoking outside. Veterinary offices have factsheets and pamphlets with information on how to quit smoking, including referrals to the free California Smokers’ Helpline and to local cessation services. Resources are sponsored by the North State Tobacco Education & Prevention Partnership [NSTEPP] and the Northern California Veterinary Medical Association.
It is common knowledge that smoking is harmful to people, but secondhand smoke is also toxic to pets. Cats exposed to secondhand smoke more than double their risk of lymphoma because they breathe in cancer causing chemicals and lick harmful chemicals found in smoke off their fur while grooming. Cancer causing chemicals can be found in dogs’ fur and urine months after exposure to tobacco smoke. Birds are more likely to get pneumonia and lung cancer when they are exposed to tobacco smoke.
In addition to smoke, cigarette butts are dangerous for animals. Butts can start fires which kill animals, or they can be eaten by unsuspecting animals. Dogs that eat cigarette butts can be poisoned by the nicotine within 15 minutes. Butts have been found in the stomachs of fish, birds, and other animals that mistake them for food.

Tobacco Packaging Deceives all of Us
|

Remember the candy cigarettes that were sold to children so they could “pretend”? We have a new concern and that is the marketing of tobacco “drops” or other products that look exactly like candy. At first you don’t even realize that the package contains a tobacco product because of its appearance. Check out the cell phone shaping! The friendly appeal of the packaging is a danger to children. This kind of product comes as small “candy” sized pieces, as “film” strips, or as toothpick sized sticks. The dissolvable products -- a pellet (Camel Orbs) much resembles a tic-tac, a twisted stick the size of a toothpick (Camel Sticks), and a film strip for the tongue modeled like a breath strip (Camel Strips), are made from finely ground flavored tobacco. The products melt in the mouth within three to 30 minutes .
